Much importance is placed on using the environment in combat. Each weapon or armor type has several variants with different enchantments that enhance their properties. A variety of weapons are available, including swords, staves, and bows. Gameplayĭark Messiah's gameplay mixes first-person melee combat with RPG elements, similar to the Elder Scrolls series. The game was developed by Arkane Studios, makers of Arx Fatalis and later Dishonored. The story follows Sareth, a wizard's apprentice, in his attempts to retrieve the "skull of shadows", an artifact found near the beginning of the game. It was as vicious of a fight as you could get: the camera even goes to slow motion for spectacular killing blows.Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is a first-person spin-off of the long-running Might & Magic franchise. At one point we kicked the side of beef and sent it hurtling toward our opponents. As we fought tooth and nail with these guys, barrels fell over and smashed or rolled around the room. We ran inside the room, which was filled with barrels and a side of beef hanging from the ceiling. By now, more orcs had rushed toward us to investigate the noise. Then we grabbed his neck, plunged a sword into his gut, and kicked the body off of our sword and over the edge of the platform. Using a special combat move we ripped away his shield. Next, on the platform, we fought sword-to-sword against another orc, sparks flying. We shield-bashed an orc, then kicked him off of the cliff where he plummeted to the rocks below. For our demo we tackled the exact same map three different ways: First, as a warrior, we ran headlong into the fray. Light filtered through weathered windows and broken wood slats. Visually, the level was superb: mountains towered all around you while ocean waves crashed into rocks far, far below. Several orc-like creatures roamed within. By way of example, De Genlis loaded up a small map that featured a narrow wooden platform and a couple of rooms built onto the side of a cliff. As a player, you're really going to use what's around you to tackle the monsters you're fighting. This means Messiah has all the bells and whistles you enjoyed from that adventure: a great lighting model, superb graphics in both indoor and outdoor areas, and physics, physics, physics. How is this accomplished? The team at Arkane Studios licensed Valve's Source engine, the technology that brought Half-Life 2 to life. De Genlis says that the idea is to present interesting situations and then allow the player to "express themselves" by solving problems in their own way.įirst-person melee combat is gritty and brutal. To stop him you can use fighting, brains, sorcery, stealth, or any combination in-between. You play a young apprentice who's been training your whole life for - well, nobody's ever explained to you for what purpose you've been singled out, but all becomes clear when a Dark Messiah threatens to rise and turn the world into his own personal hell. Although it's got the name Might & Magic attached to it, this is a much darker vision for the world, macabre and brutal. But it plays like a fantasy first-person shooter, one where anything goes. It's nominally a role-playing game: you create a character and advance your different skills based on how you want to play the game. His team at Arkane Studios (creator of the ambitious Arx Fatalis) is creating Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, a spectacular fantasy epic that should wow people with its interactive environments and open-ended gameplay. Producer Romain De Waubert De Genlis calls it "working on the immersion of the player," which doesn't sound too exciting on paper until you see it in action.
